WHAT DOES THE PRODUCT DO FOR ME?
Vitamin D is essential to the body in many ways that contribute to overall health. It contributes to normal absorption/utilisation of calcium and phosphorus; it contributes to the maintenance of normal bones, teeth and muscle function. Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system.
DON’T I GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D FROM SUNSHINE?
Many people don’t, especially in northern latitudes from November through to February (when sunlight tends to be weaker and shorter). About 30 minutes of daily sun exposure of the arms and face without sunscreen could usually provide the daily vitamin D needs. But the amount of vitamin D produced in the skin with the help of the sun might be affected by latitude, season, ozone layer and clouds, surface characteristics, clothing, skin colour, and age.1 We spend more time indoors than previous generations and use more sunscreen when we are out under the sun.
HOW COMMON PLACE ARE LOW VITAMIN D INTAKES?
According to a study* from February 2016 (* Vitamin D deficiency in Europe: pandemic?
AJCN, Feb 2016), Vitamin D inadequacy is prevalent among 40.4% of the European population, irrespective of age, ethnicity or latitude.
WHICH FOODS CONTAIN THE MOST VITAMIN D?
It is very difficult to get enough vitamin D from diet alone. Very few foods in nature contain vitamin D. Fatty fish (such as salmon, tuna, mackerel) and fish liver oils are reliable sources. Small amounts of vitamin D are found in beef liver, cheese and egg yolks.
IS THERE A RISK THAT MY INTAKE OF VITAMIN D COULD BE TOO HIGH, IF MY DIET IS FULL OF FATTY FISH, EGGS AND DAIRY PRODUCTS?
Research suggests that the risk of vitamin D toxicity is very low in healthy people at intake levels lower than 10.000 IU (250µg)/day.
WHY DOES NUTRILITE VITAMIN D CONTAIN ONLY 600 IU (15µg) OF VITAMIN D?
The dose of the NUTRILITE™ Vitamin D food supplement is based on the recommended levels set for Europe. In 2016, the European Food and Safety Authority (EFSA) published a Scientific Opinion paper on the Dietary Reference Values for Vitamin D.
Because there are many factors that can influence the synthesis of vitamin D3 in the skin, including latitude, season, clothing, sunscreen, skin colour, and age, the DRVs for vitamin D are based on the assumption of minimal exposure to the sun. The Adequate Intake level for adults recommended by EFSA is 15 µg (600 IU) per day. Taking into account these recommendations, we have designed our formula to meet this Adequate Intake level, while leaving room for vitamin D intake from dietary sources or the occasional cutaneous synthesis in response to sun exposure. This is in line with our philosophy of filling dietary gaps in the context of a healthy lifestyle rather than providing nutrients above recommended levels.
HOW SHOULD THIS PRODUCT BE TAKEN? SHOULD IT BE TAKEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH OR WITH FOOD?
Take one tablet a day, with or without a meal.
ARE THERE OTHER PHYSICAL STATES/CONDITIONS FOR WHICH USE IS CONTRAINDICATED?
There is no evidence of any contraindications with use of this product. However, as with any supplement, people who are under supervised medical care should consult their healthcare provider before using this product.
IS THERE AN ADVANTAGE IF YOU TAKE VITAMIN D AS AN ISOLATED VITAMIN COMPARED TO A MULTIVITAMIN CONTAINING VITAMIN D?
Yes. A stand-alone vitamin D supplement can be used to enhance the dose of vitamin D in a multivitamin like NUTRILITE DOUBLE X. This is a helpful strategy if a person is trying to improve their vitamin D status and fill a potential gap. Another circumstance where a stand-alone vitamin D supplement is helpful is for a price sensitive, new buyer that has been made aware (e.g. by a physician) that they are low in vitamin D. They can affordably address the specific situation with a stand-alone vitamin D supplement.
CAN THIS PRODUCT BE TAKEN WITH OTHER FOOD SUPPLEMENTS?
NUTRILITE Vitamin D can be combined with other food supplements. This allows the user he flexibility to tailor their supplement regime to meet their specific lifestyle and nutritional needs. For example, a combination of NUTRILITE DOUBLE X or NUTRILITE Daily and/or NUTRILITE Cal Mag D Plus does not pose any risk to human health, if recommended daily dosages are followed.
WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED AGE FOR USING THIS PRODUCT?
This product is designed for use by adults. Children under 12 years of age should not consume food supplements without consulting a healthcare provider or pharmacist. If a food supplement is advised for a child by a healthcare provider or pharmacist, chewable tablets designed specifically for children are recommended. NUTRILITE™ Chewable Multivitamin contains vitamin D and it is recommended for children from 4 years.
IS THE PRODUCT ALL-NATURAL?
There are two key ingredients in the formula that contribute vitamin D. Both are derived from natural sources: Cultured yeast contributes the D2 form (ergocalciferol) of the nutrient; the D3 form (cholecalciferol) of the nutrient is extracted from lanolin.
WHY DOES NUTRILITE VITAMIN D NOT CONTAIN VITAMIN K2?
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that supports several health benefits, including bone growth and maintenance. Because both vitamin D and vitamin K are important for bone mineralisation, sometimes these nutrients are paired together in supplement formulas. However, it is not necessary to provide both of these nutrients in a single supplement in order for vitamin D to be effective.
Vitamin K is found in various foods including green leafy vegetables, meat, and dairy products. Because little vitamin K is lost through cooking, most individuals get adequate vitamin K intake through their diet. In contrast, epidemiological evidence shows that vitamin D inadequacy is prevalent worldwide. One benefit of providing vitamin D alone in a supplement is that it allows individuals to have more control over their nutrient intake and thus helps them to fill dietary gaps accordingly.
